Brendan: Today was a long day! We started by getting up at 7:00 am. It was terrible! We went to bed pretty late in the past days so we were exhausted. By the time it was 8:00 I was just out of bed and they had finished packing. We went to breakfast for about 30 minutes. After breakfast we caught a cab to the airport.
The wait at the airport was not too bad. We were at the bookstore for a long time while my mom tried to find a book. All we were doing was reading comic books and trying to choose a book ourselves.
As we went through customs we had a very bad experience. We thought that we were allowed to bring cans across, but we got all of our Coke confiscated!
We had to do a transfer in Bangkok to get to Chiangmai from Krabi. The flights were terrible! I thought I was going to be sick on both of the planes. The cause was probably the mask that I was not used to wearing. I have started to wear a mask on the plane because we can’t be 100% sure that there are no peanuts on the flight. There is also a chance of catching swine flu on the plane.
Joe: We arrived in early afternoon without much ado. The airport in Chiangmai is downtown, so the 120 Baht, 10km cab ride was very pleasant. We’re staying at the Holiday Inn (a former Westin) and although a little out of the action, it is more than suitable – especially at $76 bed and breakfast for 4 people.
By action, I mean shopping. In the evening, we went to the night market – an unlimited number of T-shirts, souvenirs, food and beverage stalls and clothing & sandals places, with throngs of locals and tourists vying for the remarkable bargains. We were able to enjoy the low cost foods in the market as well: a medium pizza was $2, pad Thai $2, chicken and chips was $3 but also included a free beer! One could get used to these prices (and see tomorrow’s blog to see even cheaper prices). We had arrived by free hotel shuttle to the market, but we missed its return as 2-hours were not enough to cover the market. Eventually we took (no pun intended) a tuk-tuk back to the hotel and called it a night.
