June 11 Tour of Phuket Island's Beaches and Wots

Today, our guide and driver, Mr. Toto, picked us up for a tour of Phuket island’s Chinese and Thai temples, its beaches and the hotspots of the rich and famous (yacht club, marina, private beaches and so forth). We visited a temple high on a hill where there was a massive reclining Buddha. Later when we arrived and Chalong Temple, firecrackers were thundering in a huge brick hut to celebrate a family’s good fortune. We stopped at the Sea Gypsy village where we saw a family enjoying their lunch of raw seafood, vegetables, and rice. We talked via sign language and there was much laughter – a beautiful encounter. Later, we stopped at the market and tried Durion fruit - yuck! The highlight of the day was the strip along Patong beach where the boys hit paydirt shopping for jeans, golf shirts and other necessities.

Our pre-dinner game of waterpolo with Hawaiians (a beautiful family that we have met - Joanna, John and their three children McKenna (14), Kylie (12), and Carter (8), a few Chinese kids, and us Canadians was a hoot. We all got into the action and two hours had passed before we knew it!

In the evening, the boys and parents enjoyed the band playing in the lounge. The band has been under contract here for almost five years. As there was no one else in the lounge but us I confessed to George, the lead singer that I had a fantasy of singing with a band. Unfortunately the only songs that I know all the words to are the Sound of Music so when he asked me what I wanted to sing he just laughed. No problem! The band helped me sing Doe-a-Deer and These Are a Few of My Favourite Things. The boys were tickled pink to see their mother up there. It was good fun and all quite silly. It was an even better experience that I hoped that it would be. Really odd, too, as you couldn’t really gage how loudly you were singing and whether you were signing in the right key. The band was fantastic, playing a mix of contemporary and classic hits. We stayed for another set and then headed back to our room. I couldn’t resist another swim a set off down to meandering pool. It is lit up beautifully at night and it feels like you can swim forever without turning around – amazing. Still haven’t milked a cow yet but hope to before the end of the trip!! It’s an on-going joke in our family.

We ended the evening with a call to dad and Kaye. It was so talk to them and we were happy to hear that all was well back home.
