Deb: We were out the door by shortly after 9:00 this morning – a Kuffner record! The only reason we were up was that we thought it was an hour later than it actually was and we didn’t want to miss breakfast!
We all went off for a hike just outside of St. Lucia. The scenery was amazing and it was so very exciting (especially for Di and Brenda) to walk amongst zebras on the open plain. We also saw hartebeaste, kudu, dikers, dung beetles, and a stunning variety of multi-coloured butterflies. Just after we got into the car we saw monkeys – Brenda was screaming with excitement and Di was tickled pink. There were at least twelve of them cavorting in beside the car and up in the trees. We were amused to see that they were of the variety that Joe, Ryan, and Brendan saw in Monkeyland. The had bright blue testicles and fiery red penises. Their antics were highly entertaining. From the trees they would crouch down to get a better look at us. Lots of laughs and pictures later we headed to the beach. We had a fabulous time playing in the shallow surf (unfortunately as he current is extremely stong we weren’t able to swim in the ocean). After a beautiful hour spent in the sun and surf we headed to the St. Lucia Ski Boat Club for lunch.
The St. Lucia Ski Boat Club is right on the St. Lucia estuary. What an incredible view!! Hippos languished throughout our entire lunch on the opposite bank of the river. In addition there were at least ten crocodiles on a sand bar right in front of us. It was wonderful watching nature at work!
After leaving the restaurant we went over to a group of fishermen who had just come in with their catch. One of the fish looked like it had an huge, oversized, bright-red apple in its mouth. We were are grossed out when we were told that it was actually its stomach.
The girls then went off for yet another hike into a bird sanctuary. We didn’t see a lot of birds but were fascinated by the trees and plants – real jungle!
I stayed in this evening when the gang when out for dinner. Am now on day seven of Rocky Mountain Tic Fever and am not yet 100%. Will finish my course of antibiotics tomorrow and hope to see some additional improvement soon. The first few days were the worst. I haven’t been as ill since I had dengue fever several years ago! Luckily tic bites in South Africa don’t have any long-term effects.
We’re off to Cape Vidal tomorrow for a swim in the ocean and some snorkeling – we can’t wait!
