May 10 Mothers Day

Happy Mother’s Day! Today we visited the Swazi Cultural Centre and discovered many similarities to the Zulu ways! We were invited to join the dancing and this created terrific memories and video. Afterward, we were taken for a tour of the family village! Very enlightening. Following this, we went for a short hike to the local waterfall. Unfortunately Ryan had a good spill and badly scraped his arm and knee.

After attending to Ryan we were off to the local crafts markets where we stumbled on the Guave Café. It also doubled as a Finnish Consulate. The restaurant and craft shops are owned by a Canadian/Finnish couple. What a small world. We really enjoyed lunch and the company of the owner, Mr Thatcher who, with his wife, had been operating for 28 years here in Swaziland. He told us of the deceased King who was revered and of the new king (one of the 50 or so remianing sons). In fact, they were expecting the 2nd Queen later in the day for lunch (there are 13 Queens). Our quaint village craft visiting was interrupted slightly as we went to the local supermarket for 1st world commodities (Nescafe decaf coffee, Lays potato chips and Coke zero). Incredible how these products find their way to every corner of the globe. Our craft blitz continued with a stop at the basket shop, candle maker, carving shop and tavern (Manchester United was leading Manchester in the semi of the Champions league with the winner advancing to face Barcelona). Then back to the hotel via 25km of potholed asphalt! We’re looking forward to trying the local delicacy: chicken livers! Later, we lit the fireplace (prepared for 1 match ignition by the staff) and spent a wonderful evening lounging by the fire.
