April 6 Canga Caves

Joe: Cango Caves. Enormous, cavernous, amazing natural beauty. These are some of the adjectives that cannot adequately describe this deep and huge set of caves discovered in the 1700s and still being explored today wih new ones discovered on a regular basis. Excellent value for our tourist dollars! Jan and Colin, if you’re doing the caves, make sure to do the ‘adventure tour’ – you see much more and the group is tiny compared to the overcrowded ‘standard’ tour.

Brendan: The ostrich farm was amazing. The guide wa really good and spoke good English. The ostrichs were very cool. They were HUGE!!! Did you know that the ostrich is the biggest bird in the whole world??? The ostrich egg is also the biggest bird egg in the world!!! You would not belive how big the egg is. The egg weighs 1.5kg to 2.5kg. To show how big it is you can compare it to a chicken which is 24:1. 24 chicken eggs is one ostrich egg. Imagine how sick you would feel if you ate a whole egg.

Joe: We also experienced the hustle of the Africaans Art and Music Festival that overtook Oudtshoorn. It was a combination of Jazz festival, carnival, exhibition and it is huge. Every parking lot, service bay, park, sidewalk, open space is used for the event. The cars park illegally on both sides of the street and in the middle everywhere. Parking enforcement is left to the swarms of carnies running the streets. Pay the 5R or else!

When we got home, we tried to start a fire in our cottage’s fireplace. Not much luck due to lack of kindling. Anyway I got jabbed by a thorn on the base of the branch and my middle finger swole up! Seems the tree’s thorns are poisonous to mammals. I will report on it over time.
