April 14 Baby Back Ribs

Deb: Joining the land of the living! Must have had food poisoning yesterday – it was a challenge to get through! Woke up this morning, however, feeling almost back to normal. We were going to Robberg (a four hour hike around the coast of Plettenberg Bay – Indian Ocean) but thought it might be best to give me an extra day to recover.

Yesterday when I was down for the count Joe and the boys met a couple from Jo’berg who have a place in Plettenberg Bay. They invited us to their beach house while here in the area. We decided to take them up on their offer. We packed a picnic and headed to their vacation home. Elen and Tony were excellent hosts. They have an incredibly beautiful place (think Malibu – all glass and sunlight!) right on the beach. We went for an hour-long walk along the shore. The boys played in the surf and passed the football back and forth while we chatted. We spent the afternoon chatting about South African and Canadian life – the time just flew!

We fed the boys ribs and chicken and the local ‘Spur’ and then settled them down in our room at Emily Moon. Joe and I then went out for dinner. Emily Moon Restaurant is one the prettiest restaurants we’ve ever been to. It it truly ‘out of Africa’ – high up on a plateau overlooking a meandering river filled with bird-life. Candlabra, distressed wooden frames filled with black and white pictures of Zulu and San tribes-people, mounted horns, carved doors, ancient maps of Africa, blazing fires, and incredible food.

We finished the evening roasting marshmallows over the fire.
Life is good.

  2. Hey Deb - and speaking of libations... I will be very interested to see your 'round the world cosmopolitan photo collection.
Glad to hear you are feeling better.
I continue to read your blog with interest and update our itinerary as per your rave reviews (really appreciate the tips). We will plan on dining at the Emily Moon. Would be most grateful for your advice on a home base to stay between Wilderness and Storms River if you get a chance (jan.beardall@gmail.com) (i.e. best to stay in Knysna, Plett, Storms River etc?).
    Thinking of you all!
    Cheers

  3. DEB, JOEY, BRENDAN & RYAN - WOOHOO is right. I guess you are trying EVERYTHING...seems like you all are into adventure (thus the trip!) Anyhow, so enjoying you all from my point of view in Florida. ZIPLINING yikes! Was that a look of euphoria or sheer delight Joey? Wow, I think I would have passed on that though I do realize the view must be spectacular! The boys are swimming up a storm eh. How about 100 dolphins. The food sure looks yummy - ribs and wings being my personal favorite. Love you guys so much. Stay well (Deb, not a pleasant feeling to eat something that doesn't agree with you and Joey, glad you can bend your finger. How's your nose Brendan? Ryan? Love, Judie & Mats
