July 6 Tennis Across Africa & Asia Tour

The boys and Joe opted for a day at the tennis courts and indoor pool at the Victoria Sapa Hotel. Deb, and Averil from the UK, decided to do the furthest possible trek a 14km motorcycle and walking trek to the Tauphin village. We had heard that it is one of the poorest villages in Vietnam, so they were anxious to do their part in the local market. Thanks to Averil for her brilliant photos. One highlight was meeting Vietnam oldest person at 107! Others included enjoying a hot bath in a rainbarrel, visiting the snake wine maker and viewing the snakes and scorpion. What a day.

We all rendezvous-ed in time for the van to take us from Sapa to Lai Cai for our overnight train back to Hanoi. We were quite disappointed to learn that we would not be on the same train as Averil. We hastily made our goodbyes at the station and ran to meet the departing train. On board, we were happy to see that this was obviously an upgrade in class from the last train. It had toilet paper in the bathroom! At least before the first user finished it! The bad news, it was a rough ride and Deb and Ryan were soon digging in to the pack for Gravol! Oh, one other thing, smoking is everywhere. Although we are in a non-smoking berth, it seemed to be to be just a suggestion.
